You've just brought home your new puppy, and he's going to be learning all about life with you from the very first day he is home with you. So, best to have a plan ready and know what you should be training.
Of course, safety, security, bonding & helping your puppy to feel confident in your home and with you is your focus & priority for 3-4 days when he first arrives. But, he is still learning about your routine as he settles in during those first few days.
Teaching our puppy fundamentals like 'Housetraining', 'Food Manners', including 'Choice & Permissions', or the rules around 'no teeth on skin', or about 'alone time' and where he'll nap and relax are ALL super important lessons for his first days at home. Effective socialization is paramount to raising a confident, resilient adult dog - so that is equally as important. Then, there are things like teaching him to 'be still' and calm, or to accept handling for grooming or examinations by the vet, and things like ensuring he learns to walk calmly on his leash and to come when called.
There are SO MANY things on the list of what we want our puppy's to learn. And it can be tough to know where & when to start. Start right away. And here's the 'Intentional Weekly Training Schedule' outline of what I teach my puppies in their first days, weeks and months with me. You are welcome to download the PDF below, print if off, and have a look for some of the things to teach your puppy! This outline might give you some idea of what to teach, and then we can help you with HOW to teach each skill.
