Getting a puppy is a big decision that shouldn’t be taken lightly. When you’re looking for a dog, you want to ensure you get the right one for you — and that starts by talking to a responsible breeder. But how do you find a responsible breeder? Do you know the best questions to ask?
We have provided a list of questions provided by the Canadian Kennel Club in the download link below.
If you are looking for a registered dog, the CKC is a great place to find a licensed and, hopefully, reputable breeder.
We have also provided a downloadable copy of our own 'Pawsibilities Handout - Questions to Ask Your Breeder' in the link below. The form is in a 'checklist' format which you can print and use to record responses to your questions.
IMPORTANT NOTE: If you are buying a puppy from anyone, anywhere is New Brunswick, please always ask to see:
1.) Pet Establishment License - provided by NBSPCA, and then call NBSPCA to validate the license, any complaints & their legal privilege to sell puppies.
2.) VETERINARIAN HEALTH CERTIFICATE, FROM AN NB VET, WHICH MUST BE INCLUDED. Check to see that the document is valid by checking in with the vet. WE have provided a sample below, which you can download.
DO NOT SUPPORT PET SHOP 'PUPPY SALES', OR 'BACKYARD BREEDERS' BY FINANCING THEM WITH THE MONEY YOU GIVE THEM TO BUY A PUPPY. THE BREEDING PAIRS ARE ALMOST ALWAYS LIVING IN HORRIBLE, CRUEL SITUATIONS. YOUR PURCHASE SIMPLY KEEPS THEM MOTIVATED TO BREED.
THE BEST WAY TO STOP DISREPUTABLE BREEDERS LIKE THIS, IS TO STOP BUYING PUPPIES OR DOGS THIS WAY.
